In this direction, within the framework of the regional project of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) “Environmentally oriented regional development of the Aral region”, the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Rice named after Yu. Zhakaev, the International Institute of Water Resources Management (IVMI) are working and the Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems, together with specialists, organized a training seminar.
During the seminar, in order to further improve the skills of participating water management specialists and improve the water metering system, they were introduced to a modern water measuring device and learned how to use it, as well as how to select and calibrate the location and type of hydraulic posts in irrigation canals.
Following the results of the seminar, special certificates were awarded to the participants.

In the practical part of the seminar, a device from the Australian irrigation automation company Rubicon Water was presented, counting up to every liter of water entering the field irrigation channel of the farm, and a device for maintaining a constant water level in rice fields. . The latter apparently saves up to 10,000 cubic meters of water per shoot compared to conventional irrigation.
Vice Minister of the Ministry of Water Management and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aslan Abdraimov noted in his preface that the irrational use of drinking and irrigation water leads to an even greater shortage of it, and the head of the regional Department of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Talgat Duisebayev, said that instead of demanding regulation of water resources from above, we must effectively use them To use it, he said that it was necessary to start.
Rice Institute scientists Serikbai Omirzakov and Zhanuzak Baymanov were able to present the current water situation of our region, problems and solutions with calculations and evidence.
In turn, Yerzhan Tolegenov, a Kazakhstani representative of Rubicon Water, presented a system of water-saving automated installations. These units are made of a special waterproof material, which makes them more durable. Its installation does not require a lot of money, in general, they are equivalent to the annual volume of water discharged in households.
Alibi Bekzhanov danced to the accompaniment of a small video presentation of his farm. Any type of agricultural crops planted on the basis of scientific principles gives its results. If this is the farm “Al-Ali”, which rejected the conclusion that apples in our region do not ripen, then the fishery started this year for such a purpose should bear fruit. His passion for innovation is also evidenced by the fact that he was the first to install an automated irrigation system.
Following the results of the event, the participants showed great interest in the effectiveness of water-saving devices and realized that the mass installation of this system in our region is not far off.

The seminar “Introduction of agricultural crops adapted to drought and salinization of soils and assessment of soil fertility”, organized by the Rice Institute, has been completed in RZA-Agro LLP in the village of Gani Muratbayev, Kazaly district, covering all farms in our region. It was attended by the heads and representatives of farms of the Kazalinsky and Aral districts, who spoke about the importance of planting crops that increase soil fertility in the fields of rice rotation.
FAO-GEF project coordinator Aizhan Karabayeva specially came to the seminar and acquainted the participants with the main purpose of the project, and also stressed the importance of not losing soil fertility as much as possible, even in drought conditions. Agriculture is one of the drivers of our region’s economy. However, in recent years, the deterioration of the climate, the problem of desertification and the rest of Baikonur have brought great changes to the environment. It was said that it is quite possible to normalize these processes using technologies and medicines from developing countries.
In general, in the course of close scientific work in 2014-2017 with a Japanese company, where scientists from the Dauren Farabi-ul Rice Institute worked, automated weather station devices were installed in our experimental field. In the future, these relations will be continued, and work will be carried out in the direction of water conservation in agriculture, wastewater treatment with biological preparations, re-irrigation of crops and the introduction of other advanced Japanese technologies into production.

Despite the lack of funding under the programme-targeted financing of agricultural science, selective breeding continues. Disruption of breeding process even for one year requires a lot of time and human resources for restoration. Understanding the importance of continuous breeding process, scientists of Kazakh Research Institute of rice breeding named after I.Zhakhayev continue their work, hoping for a speedy resolution of problems with financing. To date, barley nurseries have been established according to the full scheme of the selective breeding process, more than 3500 lines and varieties of spring barley of different ecological and geographical origin are being studied. The collection contains unique varieties of domestic and foreign selection, covering a wide range of botanical diversity, origin, maturity (the collection includes ultra-early maturing varieties with vegetation period of 55-60 days). In the collection of special interest are highly productive forms of barley of two-row type of variety “nudum” and multi-row variety “soeleste”, which can serve as parental forms in the creation of bare-grained varieties. To expand the level of genetic variability along with hybridization, scientists use the method of induced mutagenesis. The main factor in the effectiveness of mutagenesis is the search for quantitative changes in mutant lines. As a result of research conducted since 2015, scientists have identified populations with a complex of productive traits and, most importantly, retained these indicators in subsequent generations. Currently, 15 highly productive mutant lines are being tested as part of competitive variety trials. The created collection of barley mutants is of practical interest for genetic improvement of barley germplasm. Thus, within the framework of creative cooperation with JSC “Nuclear Technology Park”, research on the use of induced mutagenesis as a source of creation of fundamentally new initial forms will expand the possibilities of synthetic breeding, obtain mutant lines characterized by resistance to abiotic stress factors, as well as significantly reduce the time of breeding new varieties by direct multiplication of mutant lines with a complex of positive traits.

At this stage, barley plants are in the tubing stage, and plant care is systematically carried out. It should be especially emphasized that the whole breeding process is laid down manually, and harvesting and threshing of each sample is also carried out manually, due to the lack of small-sized breeding equipment. This is painstaking work on each plant, on each grain of a small but united team of researchers devoted to science and their favourite breeding business!
